Smile...It Confuses People

into giving you money. i give props for this homeless lady that i see on the way home all the time. she's never out there without a nice big warm smile on her face and head tilted slightly to accentuate a certain sweetness - i could say her body language is very effective in creating empathy, proven by the wads of cash she counts oh so often by the gas station.

can't say i'm a donor though, immune to all those that are not 1)old person 2)animal or 3)small person.

Even bums have gone corporate...What happened to the personal service? Gone are the days where a bum would come up to you and give his little sales pitch (just needs a couple of bucks to ride the metro, to feed his kids, or to buy a bible). Nowadays it's all about billboards and positioning. Bums are staked out at the high volume, long-wait traffic lights holding up signs. The smart ones always include "Will work for food," showing they aren't shiftless or alcoholics...thus conveying they are worthy of some spare change. They know there ain't no way we're letting them in our car to help carry groceries or mow our lawns ;)

well, the worst i've seen are the ones in europe where they hold plastic babies and pretend to be nursing or use a nice sweet dog as leverage - let's hope that it doesn't catch on here..

thing is though - is that the cardboard sign doesn't do anything these days but say "hey - i'm begging." it's almost synonymous with paper/plastic cup in hand.
